The California Medical Association's 27th Annual Presidential Gala filled the SAFE Credit Union Convention Center in Sacramento for a reception, a seated dinner, speeches and a dance party that ran until the last song. CMA has been a client of mine since 2025, when they first hired me for a daytime medical symposium. They liked those photos so much that when the gala came up, bringing me back was an easy call. This time I covered the whole night, with a second photographer on the red carpet and photo booth.
The Brief
CMA sent a detailed shot list and run of show before the event. They needed the speakers and audience reactions, the VIP and sponsor tables, the sponsor champagne station and glow table, the décor and lighting before guests arrived, natural reception candids, and the band and dance floor from the front and from behind. They also wanted a separate photo booth album they could share with the guests who signed up for it.
What I Delivered
I arrived early to photograph the room and the décor before the doors opened, then covered the reception, dinner, program and dance party. My second photographer, Ray Lei, ran the red carpet and photo booth and took guests' phone photos on request, so I could stay on the program and the room. The edited gala gallery and a separate photo booth album arrived within 3 business days.

From Symposium to Celebration
My first job for CMA was a medical symposium: a daytime program of panels and speakers, where the job is clean, well-lit photos of presenters and an engaged audience. The gala was the opposite. It was a celebration, with dramatic stage lighting, haze, a live band, a sing-along and a dance floor, so the photos needed energy and color as much as coverage.
Working with the same team twice made it easy. CMA sent a detailed shot list, I knew what they cared about, and with a second photographer on the red carpet and photo booth, nothing on their list was missed even when the speeches and the dance floor were happening at once. After the gala, CMA left me a 5-star Google review.
